Rinko Kawauchi 2013 This photograph, taken by Rinko Kawachi, represents two sides of nature: the calm before the fire and the fire's explosion. Kawauchi is a Japanese photographer who showcases the boundaries of life and death. Her poetic style is inspired by traditional Japanese culture. This photo captures the emphasis of light in contrast to shadow. The artist captured a volcano in the midst of an eruption. The left side shows the darkness and shadows of the volcano. The right side shows the sun hitting the volcano and smoke dispersing into the sky. Straight down the middle of the volcano is a line of fire starting from the top and growing all the way towards the bottom. There is a smoky background filling the sky. The foreground captures burnt grass, almost black in color. This photograph makes me feel intrigued. The fire in the center draws my eye to view the destruction from a new light.
