  Cindy Sherman – “Untitled #463” (2007–2008) Cindy Sherman is an American photographer from New Jersey. She is known for her self- transformations of fictional characters. She explores topics of identity and  gender. Furthermore, Sherman is a pioneer of conceptual portraiture. The strategy Sherman uses to produce her work is self-directed. She is her own photographer, model, makeup artist, stylist, and director. She styles herself in disguises with wigs, costumes, and props to create a character. Sherman’s approach is performative and analytical. She stages herself in familiar scenes where that creates questions and conversation. Human Element: Movie Faces Places

  1. Before seeing Faces Places , what did you know about Agnès Varda or JR? Before watching the film, I did not know about either of them. I just knew they were photographers. 2. Why do you think the film centers so much around the working class? The film focuses on working-class people because Varda and JR wanted to highlight ordinary people’s lives because this is what most of us can relate to.   3. JR and Varda bond over their shared interest in creating and sharing images. Have you ever had this experience with someone else? Yes I have experience sharing creativity with someone such as through group projects. For example, when I worked at the Brooklyn Museum during high school, I worked with a group of people and we all designed a healing exhibit together.
